Five Questions to Ask before Closing on a Home

Closing on your new home is an exciting time. In the midst of it all, you may not remember to find out some things which will make the transition smooth and stress-free.

Following this checklist, provided by Greg Hancock of OwnerLand Realty in Southwest Ohio, may help:

  1. Do you have warranties and instruction manuals for appliances, the furnace, hot water heater, air conditioner, security and irrigation systems, for example.
  2. Where is the main gas and water shut-off? “You don’t want to be caught in the middle of a gas leak or ruptured plumbing, and not know where or how to shut off the gas or water until help arrives,” states Hancock in this article on his website
  3. Where are the gas and electrical meters, breaker box and thermostat located? In many cases, when your home inspection is done, the inspector will point these out to you. If not, however, ask about them.
  4. Is there any left-over paint? This will definitely be handy if you want to match paint in a room where the color is different, or you need to do touch-ups. This goes for both interior and exterior paint, even for something you might not think about – the front door, for example.
  5. Are special cleaning products needed for any surfaces? This might pertain to counters, flooring or any unusual material in the home.

Hope this list is helpful. Happy new home!
